28th June 2022:
With the recent purchase of the land on which the Old Post Office and the Guide Huts stand, there has been some concern locally about the future of the Post Office. We are happy to hear that, whilst the Guide Huts will be demolished to make room for a new residence, the Old Post Office will remain in place.
The postal service was originally in the old Light Pass Lutheran School then moved to its current site in 1960. The buildings on this site consist of two demountables and a toilet block. They were bought from Swan Reach (90 km away) to provide extra rooms for the Lutheran School. In 1982 the Lutheran School moved to Nuriootpa and the Guides bought the property. They were there until 2015 when numbers dwindled and now the closest Guide troop is 38 km away at Gawler. The Guides allowed the Barossa Pigeon Racing Club to use the boys toilets for their caging and pick up of pigeons, and the racing club to use the rooms for their meetings and parties. After 2015 the building was neglected.
Like many buildings, such as the Mission House, the Guide huts were used for different purposes over the years, as times, circumstances and needs changed. But we’re glad to know that the post office will remain. The Light Pass postal service has a fascinating history – read about it here.
